The thing that strikes me most as I peruse these and other related reviews is how often any given unit has ardent fans, giving a product 5 star ratings, while other users pan them and express great frustration over their units' technical problems. No VCR-DVD model seems exempt. It must be the "luck of the draw". Take this specific Panasonic model, for example. I bought it a little less than a year ago and it has been just fantastic! No problems. Everything works fine. It was easy to set-up and operate. It has never chewed-up a VCR tape, nor damaged any DVD's. No pauses, shudders, or explosions. Picture and audio quality have been superb. Absolutely NO service issues. I am very pleased with this unit and can recommend it with a clear conscience to anyone. As an aside, use of the s-video connector cable instead of the old composite cable noticably improved picture quality. I also liked the fact that this unit is totally configured for home theater and HDTV, which I don't currently have but may convert to in the next couple of years. My only minor complaint is that the display does not have a VCR tape counter, so it is difficult to tell how far the tape has played, recorded, rewound, etc.

So, if you buy this item, it should work fine for you too. Unless, of course, the luck of the draw gives you a lemon to deal with...

The PV-D4752 plays CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, standard DVD-Video discs, and most DVD-Rs (recordable DVDs), from which you can easily make VHS copies of wedding footage, birthdays, and other special events. Copy-protected commercial DVDs cannot be recorded. We were duly impressed with the PV-D4752's MP3 playback abilities. Each player handles discs differently, but this model read our most difficult test discs, offering fast track skips, scanning within MP3 files, and repeat functions for tracks, folders, and discs. The player does not support ID3 tags, however, and it limits the display of file and folder names to 11 characters. The two biggest drawbacks are the unit's reliance on the onscreen display (the front-panel display shows no elapsed time during DVD or VHS playback) and its habit of interrupting whichever format you're watching when loading another.

For connections, you get one each composite-video, S-video, and component-video output, as well as two sets of composite-video inputs (one on the front and one at the rear) and one RF (cable-type) input and output for the VCR. An optical digital-audio output feeds a surround-sound signal to your Dolby Digital- or DTS-decoding audio-video receiver. The main thing about this burner that distinguished it from the others was the ability to play VHS from the Component outputs. That feature is very handy for a pro-editor, like me, who wants to get the best image possible from the inferior VHS format. This feature also has allowed this deck, now that it has been retired, to be easily used by family members who aren't so tech-savvy (both DVD and VHS play from the same Component-Out, so there's no need to change inputs on the monitor).

Other than that, I have to agree with many of the others here. The 8x disk limit is a major sore spot for me, as well as the poor dependability of burned DVDs in general...

In 1986 - 1987 the Mormon church released films to the dating back from the 1940s to more contemporary. The films were placed in a series which is commonly called "Church Films". These films were in a 27 VHS set. At this time not everybody had a VCR and DVDs were not invented. Most churches in North America were setup with a television and VCR. Each library was stocked with these films. They were available to the general public, however, most individual homes were not equipped with home theater systems. Most LDS church libraries still have these films or at least a portion of these films. Many youth in the 1980s and 1990s will remember "Johnny Lingo" or "The Phone Call". However, these films did not actually replace filmstrips, an older technology, until the late 90s.

Films strips are 35 mm still framed images that are projected by light onto a wall or white screen. An audio tape provides the sound. When the slide needs to be changed you simply turn a dial on the projector, and a small beep or buzz indicates at what point during the presentation the slide needs to be changed.

As VHS tapes were replacing film strips, the Mormon church authorized some film strips be converted to VHS; they were just still images that were transitioned.

Many people think that LDS cinema started with the film "God's Army"; however the LDS church has been producing films since the 1940s. These films might never have been released in conventional theaters, but film has been an important part of LDS culture for many years.

LDS films are a form of art. The LDS motion picture studio is located in Provo, Utah and actively creates films to this day. Many of these films can be seen in Salt Lake City as a way to introduce people to the Church. There have been three major films played exclusively in Salt Lake City.

Blu-Ray, DVD And Multi-Region, Codefree, Region Free Variations And Super-Human Vision

It gets rather complicated when trying to describe the differences between Broadcast systems and Video systems so let stick to those video systems found in VCRs, camcorders, DVD and Blu-Ray Disc players etc.

Those are the basic standards and none are compatible with each other. Sometimes the A/C Hertz are 50 MHz (220 volt countries) and sometimes 60Mhz (110 volt countries) and this changes the scanning results of an electron tube, LVD or Plasma etc. 60Mhz, used in the USA for example, renders the image smoother, virtually no discernible flicker. With line doubling and quad-doubling (100 and 220 MHz and then 200 and 440 MHz).

Line doubling actually interlaces the picture into a single scan that reveals the entire frame and doubling again increased the scan lines providing for an even finer resolution and there a better sense of reality to the human eye. Technically it takes the original two-field frame and creates a progressive scan (single non-interlaced frame) output. This produces a higher resolution picture both brighter and smoother.

Some 3rd party Line-quadruplers can upscale to resolutions: 1365x1024, 720P, 1080i 852x480, 1024x1024, 1024x768 and 1365x768 and even higher. When the newest technology in video images hits the world we will be seeing NHK images of more than 6000 lines, up from the maximum of 1080P today.

If they then begin to Line-quadruple an image like that who knows what the mind might achieve if plugged directly into the motherboard of the future. Perhaps an enlarging and enhancing of human vision will be needed in the order of 1,000 eyes, 360 degree views both laterally and longitudinally, 100,000,000 lines of resolution all far outpacing current human ability.

Back to PAL-NTSC for a moment.

These many video systems were created due to incompatible electrical standards such as the Hertz, due to economic exigencies and even political motivations (for example, a country didn't want its TV to be seen by another countries citizens nearby lest they get "ideas"!

With the advent of DVD disc players Hollywood producers decided to take advantage of the new electronic potential inherent in this new groundbreaking technology to better market their movies.

With movies released in VHS VCR tape versions but in 5-6 different and non-competing systems the release of movies worldwide could be staggered according to best marketing practices so rake in as much profit as possible from every country. A movie released in April in the USA didn't have to be released until the right time in South America and the idea of people in Argentina (PAL-N) wishing to buy the film from a US retailer was virtually a useless plan as the Argentine would have no VCR and no TV of the correct system to play and display the images with. PAL-N and NTSC simply do not display correctly on the wrong systems, even the speeds of recording and playback are different. This means an NTSC movie seen on a PAL or other standard would usually be in black and white, have terribly vertical scrolling problems, have a horizontal skew at the top of the picture and be in the wrong speed so even the voices were too fast or too slow. It's a mess!

Until the Japanese VCR (and at one time even Sony's BETA) makers came out with Multisystem VCRs!

Most could only play the tapes from various standards but to display them you'd also need a TV that was multisystem as well, or 2 TVs, or even 3 each being of the appropriate system you were outputting from the VCR.

To get around the need of buying a multisystem TV Panasonic came out with the incredible AG-W1 model which had a built-in digital converter which could play, record and convert to/from all of the world five current systems. It was $4,000 but was a great device producing excellent results, albeit not for broadcasting purposes.

Many people got around having buy the AGW-1 (and its subsequent progeny AGW-2 and AGW-3) by buying a Planet Omni Tenlab Digital systems converter at a fraction of the cost of the AGW-1 and using it with a multisystem VCR. In this way the image quality was the same or better and the price when way down to the consumer.

Soon AIWA came out with the much cheaper MX-1 converting multisystem VCR which wasn't a digital type but used analog converting methods which are much inferior, then Samsung, GoVideo and a few others. Samsung was the actual manufacturer for the Panasonic AGW-1 and 2 and under their own brand they came out with a wide variety of models such as the SV-3000W, SV-5000S, SV-7000W (with the unique French Secam-L tuner built-in).

Planet Omni still has some of the Panasonic, Aiwa and Samsungs left for sale. None have been made for 2-3 years and with the death of the VCR they never will be made again. People worldwide with old home movies should consider having them transferred to DVD discs which can also be converter from PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL. All countries using any system but those two will find that their tapes can be converted to PAL and will display perfectly on their TV even if the TV isn't strictly PAL.

People in an NTSC country can utilize converting services such as Planet Omni's and convert tapes or DVDs to PAL or visa-versa to NTSC rather than buying PAL-NTSC DVD recorders (which exist) and a TENLAB converter.

Since the Hollywood producers were rather OK with the incompatible VHS video standards worldwide it was a new problem with DVD disc movies.

As all SECAM countries are also PAL countries as far as their TVs being multisystem go and the same for PAL-M (Brazil) and PAL-N (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) countries, this meant that DVD movies only had to be either NTSC or PAL and they could be seen worldwide.

This wasn't very good for Hollywood filmmakers however as too many countries could then buy discs from another country and see movies straight from their first release on disc which sometimes predated even the movies official theatrical release in theaters. This meant that a citizen of a PAL country such as Italy could buy a new movie from a New Zealand (PAL) source and see the movie (with subtitles if needed) perhaps months before the film was actually released theatrically or on DVD in Italy. This infringed on the natural markets of established theater owners and retailers in Italy.

Generally when a European country gets a movie on DVD it is also available at the same time in other Euro countries, but not always. But then an English speaking person in Australia could buy the movie from a UK source and see it in English on his PAL TV.

Again, not very good for business men and bean counters.

So a new technology was embedded into each Hollywood movie shipped out to the various countries around the world. This is called REGIONAL CODES.

They divided the world, as best as they could, into 6 regions based on film release protocols.

These regional codes are built-in to both the DVD players and the DVD movie discs as well.
6 regions, 2 video standards (PAL-NTSC) making things fairly complex.

For example, Europe is PAL and REGION 2 but Japan is NTSC and yet is REGION 2!
This means that a Japanese DVD disc would play on a Japanese DVD player fine but even though it is REGION 2 it would not play on a European PAL TV even if you took the Japanese DVD player to Europe, raised the voltage from 100V to 240V and then tried to play it. The disc would spin, the player would play it but the TV could not display it...UNLESS the TV was also an NTSC multisystem TV.

So how to get around these video standards and regional codes?

The invention of a REGION FREE DVD player (aka Codefree, code free, regionfree, all zone, universal, all region etc). But is that against the law and how can it be done? What does it mean?

By licensing agreement no manufacturer of DVD players are permitted to make a region free player. Each must be set to a specific region. They can be PAL-NTSC both but the REGIONAL CODE must be specific to a certain region. The USA is Region 1... and here are all of them:

So is it against the law to modify a DVD player and make it CODE FREE?

No, it isn't at all. Many places such as PLANET OMNI have been selling them for years. The quality of the modification rarely varies, it is generally a perfect mod so that any and all DVD movies will play but you'll need a PAL-NTSC TV or a video standards converter to see both PAL and NTSC DVD movies.

Remember that a DVD movie is NOT a DVD-R or DVD+R disc even though it may be a movie that has been recorded.

Most DVD Codefree players will play most DVD-R & DVD-RW, DVD+R & DVD+RW homemade discs.

99% also play CD discs for regular music playback and many play a wide variety of other formats such as MP3, WMA, DVD-Video, Video CD, DVD-Audio, SACD, CD, audio CD-R & CD-RW, WMA, & JPEG and JPEG and Kodak JPEG.

So, a REGION FREE DVD player can play all regions and both PAL and NTSC discs, IE every known type of DVD movie on earth, but what if you don't have a PAL-NTSC TV or a video standards converter?

Besides the fact that you can buy those items there are also CONVERTING Region free DVD players.

Some can convert a PAL DVD movie to NTSC and some can do both that and converter a USA NTSC disc to PAL.

And some can do both but if you ever get a PAL-NTSC TV you can turn OFF the conversion and then see everything, all DVD movies from all countries in all standards on any the TV in the ORIGINAL PICTURE quality. Again, on-line shops such as Planet Omni carry this type as well.

These Codefree, Converting players can be even the most advanced units with all the latest bells and whistles certainly including things like DTS STEREO, Dolby Digital, HDMI and DVI output, 5.1 and higher stereo channel output, Progressive scan and so forth.

But now let's consider what this means as regards the Blu-Ray Disc players that are Multi-region.

As HD DVD is dead as a Hi-Def format we consider that Blu-Ray Disc players and movies on Blu-Ray discs are here to stay until the next leap into the future hits us which may happen around 2012 with the entry of the latest 6,000 Line Super-Hi Definition TVs, some 6 x more realistic and 3D appearing than Blu-Ray and 1080P technology.

As with DVD region Blu-Ray discs and players also have regions, called Region A, B and C.
These are non-compatible regions which include PAL-SECAM-NTSC and all other systems.
The beauty of a Region A or B Blu-Ray disc when played in a Multi-region Blu-Ray disc player via the HDMI output (that is a single cable combining all audio and video signals) is that the TV doesn't have to be Pal-NTSC-Secam or anything specific at all. As long as the TV has an HDMI input all Blu-Ray Disc movies from Regions A and B will play in their full glory and, depending on the maximum resolution possible of each TV, in the highest quality possible. Pal and NTSC no longer exist in the HDMI world, the problems of Hertz, government controls and so forth, Gone with the Wind!

However, there are still Regions A, B and C.

For the Hollywood production companies these 3 Regions are still important, but not as once they were.

Do know that a Blu-Ray Disc movie output thru the regular component, S-Video or composite (A/V RCA cables) still requite the proper standard to view movies with, PAL for a PAL disc and NTSC for an NTSC disc. But in TVs there are no regions so any PAL-NTSC TV can display any PAL or NTSC DVD.

In the case of the Sony BDP-S300 multi-region version available now (110 volt version) you can pop in any Blu-Ray Disc movie from the A and B countries seen below and on any TV with an HDMI input you can see the entirety of any library.

The future of Blu-Ray Disc type technology?

In January 2007, Hitachi previewed a 100 GB Blu-ray Disc, which has four layers containing 25 GB each. Unlike TDK and Panasonic's 100 GB discs, they Hitachi claims this disc is readable on a standard Blu-ray Disc drive a firmware update is the only requirement to make it readable to current players and drives.

Many other iterations and variations of the Blu-Ray milieu are popping up including such novel notions as BD9 / BD5 Blu-ray Disc, AVCREC, Blu-ray Disc recordable, HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc hybrid discs, HD VMD/Versatile Multilayer Disc (new low-profile competitor) AVCHD, Digital Multilayer Disk - the successor technology to Fluorescent Multilayer Disc, Enhanced Versatile Disc (EVD), Forward Versatile Disc (FVD) - Taiwanese backed red laser format, Fluorescent Multilayer Disc, Holographic Versatile Disc - standards with 200 and 300 GB storage are under development 3D optical data storage - a next-generation technology expected to provide TB-capacity discs, Protein-coated disc, Tapestry Media, Ultra Density Optical LS-R - a "layer selection" technology allowing the stacking of very large numbers of DVD-like data layers in a single disc, Professional Disc for DATA (PDD or ProDATA) and much more.

You can use a plug-in cooler (truck stops sell them, as well as stores like Wal-Mart) but they do not stay as cold as an actual refrigerator, so dairy and other items that require cold temperatures will go bad faster. We know of drivers who removed a shelving unit in their company truck and purchased an actual freezer that was about 3 feet tall. They bought a 1,500 watt inverter to power the freezer and a small microwave to heat up the frozen food. They stocked up on low-fat, frozen dinners. When they were at home they cooked chicken and browned ground beef to keep in the freezer. Using a crock pot or the Burton stove, they could use canned beans or broths to make "homemade" chili or low-fat Chicken and dumplings (using canned bread dough for the dumplings).

2. Get into an exercise routine. Exercise increases your metabolism and releases "feel good" chemicals into your bloodstream. Trucking is a sedentary job- meaning, truckers sit around a lot. They sit when they drive. They sit when they go into the drivers lounge at the truck stop. They sit when they eat. It's easy to let yourself get into a routine that doesn't include exercise. You've got to get into the habit. You can use a tv/vcr combo or a dvd player and get some exercise tapes- you will have to modify the aerobic or yoga routines for the space in your truck, but something is better than nothing. You can use a jump rope or take a few laps around the truck stop before you start driving for the day. You don't need to be a runner; a brisk walk will do the job. Believe me, after a few weeks, you'll feel better and healthier.

3. Take a break. Try to take some "you" time every day. Read a pleasant book (try to stay away from emotionally charged or depressing stories) or watch a movie. Find a hobby you can take with you on the road- learn to play the harmonica or the banjo, take up bird watching. Collect digital photographs of the tourist attractions you pass-try to visit them if you can get the truck in there. Get a software program-a game or learning software-for your laptop if you have one.

4. Look at the lighter side of things. Trucking will stress you out if you let it. Try to enjoy yourself instead of getting worked up about things that go on. Make a list of the things that happen to you. If a four-wheeler flips you the bird, don't try to chase him down and "teach him a lesson." Instead, mark it on your list and laugh about it. If you're driving in heavy traffic, make it your goal to count how many times you see a four-wheeler cut somebody off. If you are waiting in a backup caused by an accident, kick back, put your feet up and enjoy some good tunes on the radio. You can get angry or you can get a kick out of it. The choice is up to you, but in the long haul, you'll be a lot happier if you get a kick out of it.

5. Be nice to your dispatcher. Some dispatchers are nice, competent and courteous. Others are jerks and know-it-all idiots. Whatever type you have, try to be friendly. If you have a nice and/or competent dispatcher, appreciate him or her. If you have the other kind, prepare yourself ahead of time so his or her antics won't take you by surprise. You don't have to lower yourself to the level of a dimwit in order to deal with a dimwit. If you have a bad dispatcher, imagine him or her as a chimpanzee wearing a diaper and banging on a pot with a wooden spoon. Images like that ought to make you laugh when you get off the phone instead of wanting to punch someone.

6. Talk to other truckers but don't let their talk get you down. Truckers can be terrible whiners. It seems any time you get a group of truckers together, someone is bound to complaining. There are plenty of over-the-road drivers who have a positive outlook, though. Try to find that type of driver to talk with. Don't get caught up in what I call "sitting on the porch." I worked for a company that had a nice porch outside the drivers lounge and drivers would sit around talking. All too often the talk turned sour and it seemed the more I sat on the porch, the worse my outlook on my job and my life became. I made a conscious effort to refrain from sitting on the porch, and I was a lot happier because of it. But the same thing happens on the cb radio. When the trucker-tales start to get a little too tall, turn off the cb and find some good music to listen to.

7. Keep your paperwork in order. Logbooks, freight bills, toll receipts... they can be overwhelming. But it's worse if you get behind. Be sure to keep your logbook up to date and plan ahead if you think you will be pressed for on-duty time. You never know when the DOT man at a weigh station is going to pick your truck for a paperwork check. This isn't a problem if you have things in order, but if your logbook is sloppy and your paperwork is disorganized, or if it takes you a long time to get it together before going inside, the DOT man is more likely to take a closer look. And that means he's more likely to find something wrong...

Try to keep your bills and logs neat. If you have a laptop, try the new software for computerized logbooks- they figure out all the details for you and tell you when you are out of hours- without you having to figure it out. Keep your dash clear of clutter, decide where you things belong and keep them there. You'll find that you waste less time looking for things when you know where they are to begin with.

All-in-all, trucking is an enjoyable job. People from all walks of life become truckers and a lot of people who don't ever get into trucking wish they had. These few tips can make the difference between a job you enjoy and a job you merely endure.

Well, I had this machine for about a year now. Never ever had any technical problems with it. The only problem I had was my own mistake in disc selection. This machine excepts ONLY DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM. DO NOT TRY any dics with a + symbol, it won't work. Propriatory choices I suppose. In case of DVD-RAM I have nothing but the best to say. Yes they do cost a bit more money but they are good for 100,000 times re-recording.
Dubbing works fine, DVD recording quality is as good as your signal. It never failed to play a commercially recorded disc, and I make a lot of discs on my computer and everyone works like a hod damn LOL.
I guess like any new technology it takes a bit of practise and getting used to to make something work. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the limitation in disc choice. There are ones out there excepting any format DVD and lets face it, computers have been excepting it for ages now, and DVD/RW is now dirt cheap. I hope this will help some folks out there decidng on the machine. The situation is way better with this one now, lot's of bargain prices out there.

So far over 50 vhs tapes converted to dvd. My old TV's built-in vhs tape player is on its last legs.
Only had a problem with one of the tapes - I think it had to be a problem with a bad tape. It will not copy tapes that are copy protected.
Saved a lot of money.

A nice feature is if the tape exceeds the available space on the dvd (a little over two hours), the converter automatically "finalizes" the dvd (if this option is selected). Otherwise you need to "finalize" the dvd manually (very easy to do) in order to be able to use it. Finalizing a dvd while at the same time rewinding a tape required about the same amount of time.

Since a vhs tape does not have chapters as some dvds do, another nice feature is to automatically encode chapters at either 5 or 15 minute intervals. You can then skip to the next "chapter" using the "next" button on a dvd controller.

Very easy to use. First hook it up to a TV so you can see the onscreen displays, etc. Insert a tape and stop at the point where you want to begin copying. Insert a blank dvd and when it is done "loading" you are ready to begin the copy by pressing a handy button on the front of the machine.

Have You Ever Had a Battery Leak in a TV-VCR Remote?

A battery leak in a flashlight is not too bad. You simply clean the contacts and all is well, but a battery leak in an electronic device usually spells doom for the device. The fluid that comes out of the battery is corrosive and will normally cause damage to the sensitive circuitry in an electronic device.

There is hope! Did you know that most battery company's actually Guarantee that their battery will not leak and damage your electronic device? The next time you buy a set of batteries, look on the package for a guarantee. If it does not have a guarantee, I would stay away from those batteries.

NOTE: I have only seen this type of guarantee on standard size Alkaline batteries: AAA, AA, C, D, and a few watch batteries. I'm not sure if re-chargeable batteries leak and I'm not sure if they offer this type of guarantee.

When batteries leak, if the item is not that expensive, most people will simply throw the item away and buy a new item, but what about bigger ticket items like a digital camera? Battery leaks are not covered by the camera warranty, and having someone clean the battery leak could void your camera warranty. This is the where battery guarantees come into play.

For example, I had an $80 dive light in which the batteries leaked. I thought this was really strange because I changed the batteries weekly. TIP: Never go night diving with old batteries. I sent the dive light to the battery company and I received a new light (newer model) and new batteries.

Example two, my friend had an old camera winder which was damaged by leaking batteries. We sent the winder to the company and in a few weeks the battery company sent a check to buy a new winder and of course new batteries.

The obvious drawback to the guarantee is you have to pay to ship your item to the company, and you will be without the item for a while (4-6 weeks). Also, it is the company's discretion to repair or replace the item. For me, it's a hassle to send the item to the battery company if a replacement can be purchased for less than $20.

Do's and Don'ts:
1. Do make sure the battery company offers a guarantee on their batteries and read the terms of the guarantee.
1. Don't mix and match batteries? This will increase your chances of experiencing a leak and this will void the guarantee.
2. Don't leave batteries in electronic devices for extended periods of time.
3. Don't expose electronic devices to excessive heat, as heat will cause a leak and possibly worse, an explosion.

Whenever possible, buy rechargeable batteries. They can be used over and over again, but they need to be used, and over time they will begin to lose their ability to hold a charge. Don't expect a rechargeable battery to hold a charge after sitting in your desk drawer for two months. You will be able to recharge the battery, but the charge will not last as long.

Don't throw that thing away just because the batteries leaked in it! Check if the battery company has a guarantee!

Home theatre systems have come a long way from the days of placing two huge speakers on either side of your television and listening to records while watching Saturday Night Fever on your VCR and television. These days there are as many ways to design a home theatre system as there are customers to buy them.

"The basics of the home entertainment system haven't changed much in the last 15 years or so. What have changed are people's tastes and priorities," explains Adam Bowden of Bose Home Theatre. "Fifteen to 20 years ago a home entertainment system meant music. People would spend hours in stores and bring in a variety of music and listen to the various speakers before selecting a unit to buy. Today a home entertainment system is a visual experience focused on movies, and people make decisions based on aesthetics, under the assumption (and rightly so) that the sound will be exceptional. They will purchase a home theatre system that is visually appealing and assume that the sound will be appealing as well."

"Prices are falling on flat panel televisions and the quality is going up so more people are incorporating bigger flat panels and surround sound into their home theatre system design," says Joe Strang, President of Show Case Home Theatres in Alberta. "The other big thing is the all-in-one touch pad controls."

The price of a home theatre system depends on how seriously you take your entertainment needs. According to Strang, you can buy a "big box" system for $5,000. But to really get the whole experience, he recommends having a custom system installed.

"You have to start with speakers, remote control, and flat panel all installed and you can do that for about $9, 000," he says.

But if money's no object then there's no end of fun to be had. "We've done media rooms that are $500,000 for one room. For that you get projectors that have better than movie theatre quality, sound so good that when someone's whispering on screen it feels like they're whispering in your ear."

Some homeowners go for the total theatre experience and have custom theatre seating installed in their media rooms, with one-touch remote controls in the arm of each chair, massage units and heated seats.

"We've even put motion in the seats so that when there's motion in the movie you feel it in your seat," he says. "And I don't mean it just vibrates...it actually moves."

Other options for your home theatre system include custom draperies, acoustic paint, and sound-proofing. This may seem like overkill but Strang says that most homes over $700,000 now come with a media room or dedicated home theatre room.

"I find that we usually install home theatre systems that are about 10 per cent of the value of the home, not just in the home theatre room but throughout the house, multi-room sound, lighting, automation and such. So for a $1.5 million home, you're looking at $150,000 worth of home entertainment equipment."

This product was ordered from Amazon Market Place, with the seller being Discount Jungle. It was a reconditioned player, but it was the one that had the features that I was looking for and it fit the bill for it's intended purpose. It was easy for me to get it set up and running as all I had to do was remove an old VCR recorder/player and put this one in it's place. I am satisified with the player, and one thing that I did want in this player was the DVD/VCR combo so that you could use both media. There is one thing, however, that I would criticize here and that would be that the remote control for the unit did not have an eject button for the VCR/DVD as the instruction book shows. It appears that Discount Jungle sent a remote control that was similiar to the one in the owner's manual, and most of the buttons are the same with the exception that it didn't have an eject button. Other than being disappointed with the remote that came with the unit, I like the unit and am satisified that it was as advertised. I would have rated it five stars if not for the wrong remote control.

Playstation 3 may well be too hot for it's own good according to some owners who are having problems keeping it cool In all fairness, the games console is not the only electronic item at fault here, pretty much everything from the VCR, DVD Player and any Hi-Fi equipment throws out a huge amount of excess heat.

The root cause of the problem is not necessarily that electronic kit is creating more heat, it has much more to do with the fact that we have LOTS more gadgetry in the same spaces that housed a lone Playstation and a VCR not many years ago Most of us do not have lots more space than 5 years ago, unless we've been fortunate enough to have a house with a large den for keeping an using all the fun stuff in the house. Even then we are probably cramming more kit into the same cabinet or more likely, simply stacking the next new item on top of the last!

The results vary for each different owner, but commonly we see room temperature rising and electronics overheating and causing the electronic toys in our collections starting to malfunction

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, it is a fact that Playstation 3 consumes 8 times as much power as Playstation 2. That's really greedy! So we have kit that wants more power and is causing overheating and failure, so what can we do about it?

Of course if we were all happy to give up all this electronic wizardry, we'd solve the problem in a stroke - put it out for the Garage Sale or put it on Bay!

Now they are clear we need to remember to dust these more regularly to prevent the problem from recurring. A really simple trick to improve the air flow in a stack of electronic goods is to increase the space around each air vent on the equipment, so how do we do that?

Easy, call up your friend who plays squash with a passion. Turn down his offer for a game (trust me when I say it's not a game for gamers!) but offer to take all his old and broken squash balls from him for FREE!

The difference between an ordinary and high definition DVD player

It is not only the fact that a high definition DVD player provides us with the combination of very high quality audio and video. It also provides us with the ability to play the latest DVDs from any region of the world. A costly and good quality DVD player that is not region free or high definition can also provide quality audio and video. But the performance of such equipment is restricted in the sense that it can only play DVDs from that particular region, with that region standard built-in. The standard video resolution can be at best 480 visible lines of details. On the other hand a high definition DVD player enables you to view 1080 visible lines providing a greater detail of a picture or image. When it is a region free DVD player, it can play any DVD from any part of the world, with precision, on your TV, that might not be originally compatible with the standard of the DVD. Therefore, the differences are, that an ordinary DVD player will allow you visualise up-to 480 lines while a high definition, with its 1080 lines, provides a better picture clarity. The High definition DVD player also comes in two categories; one is of 720 pixels while the other is of 1080 pixels. Thus resolution and quality wise, there is quite a big difference between an ordinary DVD player and a high definition DVD player.

The High definition region free DVD player

Now we come to the object of our study, the high definition region free DVD player. After having a brief overview of the ordinary and high definition DVD player and their basic differences, we now move on to the term 'region free'. A region free DVD player is one that can play DVD of any standard to be viewed on your TV without going for the compatibility equipments. DVDs cannot be played on all players. Different regions in the world use different standards for a DVD, like PAL, NSTC, and SECAM, as used in Asia, Europe and North America, except that France with few of its neighbouring countries, use SECAM. A region free DVD player will play all types of DVD irrespective of whatever standard they might follow, which solves your problem of not being able to play a DVD of a different standard.

Generally, three standards are followed all over the world in case of DVDs. These are PAL standard, that are used in most part of Asia, Europe and Africa; the NSTC standard used in North America and major part of United States; and SECAM standard, followed in France and few other European countries and Middle East. The problem with these standards is that they are not compatible to each other. As a result, a DVD procured from Europe or Asia, is not compatible with your NSTC compatible TVs used in America. Similarly, the NSTC compatible DVDs from the United States cannot be played in most part of Europe and Asia since they use PAL compatible TVs. The same principle is applied to playing SECAM, the oldest of the standards, on non-compatible TVs elsewhere. A region free DVD player solves these problems by allowing you to view DVD with any standard on any type of TV with its inbuilt system of conversion to compatible standards.

Here are a few ways to save money at Christmas without sacrificing fun. Even if money is tight, it's easy to have fun at Christmas, you just have to be creative.

1)Go Sledding.

Focus on activities that are cheap and free. Christmas is about families spending time together and forgetting about their problems. While you could go shopping or take the kids to a movie, why don't you have some real fun and take them sledding. My dad built the fastest sled in the world for about $12 when I was kid. There are a number of things you can do as a family that are not all that expensive but will get you into the Christmas spirit. Try decorating the house or baking Christmas cookies. If you want an outdoor adventure, hike into the woods and snag the biggest tree you can find (Clark Griswold style).

2)Watch Rudolph or National Lampoons Christmas Vacation

Again, for a relatively low price you can get the family together to watch your favorite Christmas classics. All you need is a VCR or DVD player, hot chocolate, and marshmellows. While I always wish I could have more stuff, my Christmas was never ever bothered by the fact that we didn't have a lot of money. Even when I was a kid, I knew the magic of Christmas was just as strong in our crappy house as it was in my friends homes.

So when you are buying your presents this year, buy as much as you can afford to give, and nothing more. Do not sacrifice your children's Christmas next year by overdoing it this year. If you don't have as large of a budget for Christmas this year, make up for it, by doing something constructive and fun with your kids. They'll be much happier than seeing you destroyed when it comes January.

I have had this product for a couple of years and I have never had any of the problems the others are talking about. As far as noisy, the only time I hear anything is when it rewinds VHS tapes.

A friend of mine has recently asked me if I had a machine which could copy VHS to DVD, and I told her yes, and that I'd check it out. we have used Sony DVD-R discs, 4.7 GB/ 1-16x discs, they work great. You have to make sure when you are trying to copy onto a DVD, that they are compatible with the machine, this machine is a DVD-R, DO NOT USE DVD+R discs, they will not work. You have got to read the manual and you too can recopy VHS to DVD's as easily as I have. and don't forget to finalize the disc when done, this apparently is what allows you to view the disc on other machines.

I'm happy with my player/recorder, WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT!!!!

I really like this machine, but the manual leaves something to be desired. The recording I've done so far is quite good. It is not too hard to setup. The only problem I've had with the machine, is that when I program a recording and insert a DVD, I no longer have the use of the DVD drive and cannot make changes in the programming, unless I unplug the machine for about an hour. It then looses the time and the recording info I've programmed. This seems like a design flaw. I haven't tried programming more than two DVD recordings yet.

I haven't tried the VCR to DVD recording, yet or the editing features.

Tha manual is a different matter. It has all of the information, but you have to work for it. It would be nice if the manual was set up in the same order as the setup of the machine. It tells you step-by-step how to set up different operations, but not in the same order as the menu. It would also be nice if there was a glossary of terms that they use. I have figured out some of the terms, but it is difficult and time consumming. They should have someone redo their manual.

I have been using Maxwell 2x DVD-RW in the machine. They seem to work well. On the DVDs I don't want to keep, I do a full erase on my computer.

This is a nice combo DVD/VCR. I've had it for a couple of years now and have had no problems. That's really why I'm writing; I want to let people know the ones with problems are probably the exception rather than the rule.

The only disadvantages to this product for me:
1) On the VCR, you can't FF by time (a panasonic feature; FF a given number of minutes)

2) Comprehensive remote; for me, the more buttons the better. I hate on-screen menus. How can I see what the picture looks like when I adjust the tracking if 88% of the screen is the tracking menu?

3) Many flavors of A/V OUTPUT: digital audio (coax and optical), composite video (of course), component video (nice for home theater), S video.

I had to go through several DVD's before I found the match. Calling the Sylvania 1 800 number on the top of the player/recorder gave me great customer service. The call was picked up quickly, I had the rep walk me through the error messages. All my of my DVD's resulted in error messages, so I was politely asked if I would be willing to be put on hold while the rep did some research. After a few minutes, he came back (thanks Jason) with a list of makes and types that would work. Looked for them on-line and found them right away. Delivered today and I've been recorded from the TV to vhs, from the TV to DVD, from DVD to VHS and from VHS back to DVD. I also recorded music Cd-r and video on a dvd-r on my laptop and they played beautifully. Quick setup because I had an old sylvnia VHS recorder and DVD player so the remote and the front panel are almost exactly the same. Just swapped out the old one and I was ready to go -- with the right DVD's. and here they are: Fujifilm DVD-R, 4X. Plugged in the HDMI cable that had been previously connected to a non-Blu-Ray player, plugged in the power cord, put the batteries in the remote, open/closed disk-drawer with disk in it, pressed play, and movie began. Couldn't have been easier.

I've owned about a dozen different brand DVD players over the years, including Sylvania and, regardless of the brand, they all had superior picture, but a rather limited life of the unit. So in my opinion, and especially for this purchase, it did not make sense to spend a lot on a new player, when the picture and sound are about the same on them all. So I went lowball and applied a Amazon gift card to the price, and got the whole shootin' match delivered within about 3 days (with free shipping, no less) to my door for out of pocket. A new Blu-Ray player for ? Yep, it happened!

To see the picture from this Sylvania Blu-Ray on my plasma screen Samsung, you'd never know it wasn't a 0 unit. So I saved enough money to afford a few more Blu-Ray movies, though I actually get them now from Netflix.

Ease of use - Easy, hook up and go. One thing I like is that the remote control uses a switch rather than logic buttoms so you know from across the room whether you are trying to control a vcr or dvd. The operations of the rest of the remote controls could be clearer. A big problem I have is that the remote has a LOT of plain buttons that all look they same. In a dim room I usually hand to to somebody else to fast-forward, etc.

Picture Quality - Haven't used it on a discriminating system but it looks ok to me.

Although it seems to be pretty well panned by most of the other reviewers of this unit, we just bought two of them last week (2 TV rooms and all). They were the last two units on the shelf and 0.00 each, and so far they've been great! The TIVO'esk pause, and replay live TV buffer of the hard drive is really the best feature for us. We've recorded several TV shows via the timers and that's worked fine also. I can only think that the units bought in '05 and mid '06 had "issues". Nice looking unit, ours are all black and not like the photo in the sales add here. Easy to use on screen menu, and the varibles of the recording modes are good too. Only problem that has sometimes happened (on both our units) is sometimes after using the time delay the picture will still stay a few seconds delayed. If that happens we now know to go to "menu" and back to "watch live TV" to fix it. Just pressing the "live TV" button on remote doesn't fix it. Can't 'skip' commercials, but you can fast to really fast forward through them. As with so many things you buy now a days, the manual isn't an awful lot of help past the ultra basics of operation and setup. Comparing the different brands that are similar to this one for the price this is we feel a really good value if you're looking for this type of replacement unit. We had a DVD recorder poop out on us and so when we went shopping for a replacement and saw this unit at the store and at that price we said why not! And bought two of them!

I wanted to get my old VHS home movies onto DVD before the tapes rotted away to nothing, so I purchased this Sylvania recorder. I've filled up 25 Verbatim 16x DVD-R's now, and so far I'm very satisfied with this unit. The only complaint I have is that it's kind of tricky to get the tracking adjusted satisfactorily. You have to play your VHS tape for a few minutes and work with the two tracking buttons on the front of the machine until you're sure all the static lines are gone. Then push rewind to go back to the start of the tape without pressing stop (if you do, the tracking will be messed up again). Then pause the tape and insert your DVD-R (DVD+R's work too, although the instruction manual doesn't mention them), choose the DVD record speed (the 120-minute SP mode provides good results) and press the DUBBING button. After the recording's done, you need to use the setup menu and finalize the disc so it can be played on a standard DVD player.

Thanks to the Sylvania ZV420SL8, my old videos are now preserved forever on discs. That alone makes this unit worth its weight in gold. Be forewarned, however, that it will NOT allow you to transfer licensed VHS movie tapes to DVD.

We just got the TV last week and had no issues with delivery. It came in on time and had no damage to the packaging. I was not home but my wife hooked it up and it works well. The picture is good & the DVD works. The price with built in DVD was better than I have found any place else. So far I would recomend it. This upconverts the regular DVD very nicely. The other bonus was that I could record my personal VHS tapes on DVD. I have my wedding and family functions that I would hate to lose. Not only was this easy to do, the DVD came out better than the VHS version. Just make sure you finalize the disc so you can play it on any DVD player.

I personally don't record anything from TV. But, there are several ways to set this up either with an HDMI cable, directly to your TV, thru a home theater system, or your cable/satellite box. It's not point and click to set up. You have to manually set it up to work, but it will record. As another reviewer stated, this will not record protected material. It's not the machine's fault. For some reason,some "hi fi" VCR'S don't necessarily have good stereo

The tuner is excellent! This recorder outperformed my standalone QAM tuner (which only pulled in about 25% of the available channels). It might even be better than my Sharp TV's QAM tuner. I don't think it missed a single channel. Futhermore, it automatically skipped any encrypted channels, saving me the trouble of manually deleting a ton of empty channels.

I connected the recorder using HDMI cables. The picture quality is very sharp and very clear. HD channels are downsampled to 720x480, even when just viewing them (ie not recording). They still look great, but they are not HD. It would have been nice if the HD channels were not downsampled when connected via HDMI, but it's understandable. The analog channels of course do not look as good as the digital channels, but they look as clear as they ever have. It's just that the digital channels look that much better!

I have so far only tested HQ mode, and the record quality was exceptional. I recorded an episode of "House" from FOX (HD 16x9 720p). I was pleased to discover the unit records widescreen material anamorphic instead of letterboxed. In HQ, the audio was ac3 256kbps 2-channel. I believe the audio was downmixed to 2-channel (from 5.1), but it sounded great nonetheless.

I had my TV aspect set as "16x9 wide" in the recorder's settings. I noticed that if I set it as "4x3 pan and scan" it crops the left and right edges of widescreen channels. If I set it as "4x3 letterbox" it letterboxes the widescreen channels. I would assume that any recordings would be the same, but I have not tested that.

I recorded onto Maxell DVD-RW discs. I was very happy to see that RW discs work just fine. After finalizing the disc, it played well in any other player in the house, including the PS3. An un-finalized disc only plays in the recorder.

The menu takes a little getting used to, but it's actually quite well designed. I only have a few complaints. I'd prefer "Timer record" to be at the top, or even accessible via a single button on the remote (perhaps it is. I haven't read the manual yet). And I'd like quicker access to finalizing a disc. But overall, it's well done.

The remote is fairly well layed out. It is way better than the remotes that came with the Philips recorders and players. And the "eye" sees the remote from anywhere in the room. There are still some buttons I don't know what they do, but again, I haven't read the manual yet.

I bought this after returning a similarly-priced tunerless player-only combo product made by Samsung. That one would only output VHS over the composite line. No component. No HDMI. Apparently some upscaling or signal processing is involved in making the VHS play over those outputs, but the Magnavox outputs VHS over all three types of cables. I don't need to use two inputs on my tv, and I don't need to find my tv remote to switch inputs if I want to watch a tape.

Picture quality is excellent for dvd, VHS, and the cable-box signal I'm running through the player. The VHS picture is not as good as dvd, but I didn't expect it to be. It's still a high quality four head VCR/VHS player that looks tons better than my now dead one from 2001.

I tested the recording functions, which I don't generally use, and they work great, even with cheap dvds. Set-up was easy, and I didn't have any trouble figuring out the remote.

The long and short of it is that I was able to replace my dead vcr at a reasonable price with something that suits my current needs and home entertainment configuration.

I've had this player for almost 5 years now, and it's been very good to me since I originally purchased it. It hasnt had any compatibility issues, and usually played without skipping.

As of last week or so, I began having problems with skipping on dvds. I presume I'll have to open it and manually clean the lens. After 5 years, I cant say I dont expect it to some degree. I'm not too worried, I think a simple cleaning will solve the issue.

I do recommend you buy this, it's a reasonably priced vcr/dvd player, looks nice, and works pretty well. Take good care of it and it should last years.

E 'was the early 1980s, and although I do not know exactly what year it was, I remember my first experience with an amazing new device called the VCR.

What a good idea! We were very happy about the opportunity to record and watch TV whenever we wanted. I was a big fan of David Letterman show and was quite revolutionary at the time of capture with the ability to be able to read while I was asleep. As late as limited my ability to lookthe show and still wake up the next morning to go to work!

Fast forward a few decades. Speaking of some cool video technologies. My DVD burner makes the historical aspect, like a VCR, Victrola! In fact, the VCR, I was recently in the idle and unused in a corner of my basement.

My DVD recorder has many features, but since I as a replacement for my old VCR, I can not many of them, such as editing functions.Basically I just want to record TV programs and watch whenever I want.

What features can I best for my DVD recorder? Forget the Rewind. No need to rewind a tape and if I wait just done. When I think of is that! I do not know how many times I missed the beginning of the recording of a show because I was waiting for a completely rewind the tape. It seemed that for ever!

Another feature I like is that onlyYou can record a program, then you start watching before it's finished recording.

This might not sound very good, until the situation occurs when you become a two-hour program you want to watch the instant darling of the spouse starts to unfold. With the DVD burner, I can start recording the program for two hours, I want to see, while my wife watches her show-time.

When my wife's show is over, I can play "click" on my DVD recorder and already you can watch my programwhile they continue to receive well-behaved the rest of the program for me.

Jump over the advertising, is that I often end up watching a show about 30 minutes after the show is over. With my old VCR, I would wait until the show ended before I stopped the tape, which often means that I wait until the next night, was to watch the show if I do not stay too late.

Many TV newsrooms use super VHS, in their cameras, or for editing & dubbing in the studio... quickly, on the fly.

Flaw, bug, & software free, fool-proof analog video almost as good as DVD, with S-video & multiple inputs & outputs that would make any videophile drool. The more sophisticated a machine becomes, the more sophisticated a user will have to be happy with it. Great pic, great sound, & fantastic for quick editing on the fly... maybe to later be burned on a DVD.

The tuner gets a better pic, than my sony wega's tuner. If you get a bad channel 9, one of you're RF cords may be broken inside, at the end, or it not connected properly. Don't blame JVC. I own this & 3 other JVC s-vhs machines. The tuner is better than any equipment I'm seen... even on channel 9. But really, if you don't have a cable box or satellite, don't buy this machine, it's capable of much more than your system is capable of. If you don't know what a s-video connector is for & why you need it, these machines are too good for what you're capable of. AMF if you don't notice a startling difference in the picture quality compared to ordinary VHS, you're TV or how you got it hooked up isn't good enough.

But these machines also play back ordinary VHS tapes with better quality than ANY other machine. There are pic/filter settings to clean up extra crummy tapes too.

This particular machine I purchased as a back-up & extra. I was expecting it to be the quality of some of their cheapest s-vhs machines. To my surprise the machine works very well & the pic is excellent for s-vhs at this price range.

One minor problem noted. The oscillator that generates the voltage for the fluorecent display generates interference to my Akai DVD burner it's setting on, & my other JCV s-vhs machine I have stacked ontop of it (on top of that I have my Directv TVO box). So with 4 units stacked together some interference came from this machine's fluorecent circuits. I found if I slid it 1" back from the burner, & the other machine ontop of it 1" back, all the interference disappeared. But now they aren't flush with each other. Someday I'll try stacking them differently. Beside them I have a JVC DVD player, Terapin VCD/CD burner, & another JVC s-vhs deck stacked together. Between the 2 stacks is 2 5" LCD monitors (for dubbing/cueing).

Anywho, it's not unusual to have stacked machines interfere with each other. But it's the first time it ever happened with a JVC unit. Some TVs will even interfere with some machines set on top of them. It's not a defect but rather an occasional coincedence that one machine is emitting a certain frequency close to a frequency that another machine is particularly sensitive to. Moving the units a little or the wires behind them usually will clear it up.

Update: I've read S-VHS tapes are harder to come by in another review. These machines use ordinary VHS tapes, you don't need super-vhs tapes for them, but they should be good tapes. My best pix on the come from ordinary t-120 & t-160 memorex tapes I buy in 10-packs real cheap. DVD burners & blank DVDs are getting cheap but the lasers & drives wear out after your 100th to 500th disk. 10 years after your fifth DVD burner has bit the dust your super-vhs machine will still be going strong. I know from experience, I'm a tech, I work on stuff like this all the time. My first 10 year old super-vhs machine is still running like new after extremely heavy use & conditions. It's been banged around overstacked, & used in hot environments that would kill most electronic equipment. It's never been opened or repaired. The newer cheaper s-vhs models only had minor negligible problems, & are still many times better than any ordinary vhs machine.
